Think about it. Tom and his group of pioneers did a lot more than creating a giant social website. The ripple effect of Myspace is more like a Tsunami effect!
Myspace forever changed the way internet marketing is viewed. Millions of users logged in several times a day discussing things they like and don't like, offering marketers plenty of affordable and accurate impressions to their target consumer.
Myspace Music changed the way music is shared on the internet. It could even be credited with launching several successful careers. It offered users a way to feel connected to their favorite artists, and remain aware of new releases and special offers. YouTube and Vevo can point to Myspace Music for laying the groundwork for much of their success.
Several other social networking sites have found success following a model proven successful by Myspace. Facebook is the current "big thing". Google + is promising to use all of Google's strength and resources to take that title. The floodgates for these sites was opened by Myspace.
Even the "blog-o-sphere" took a healthy bump when all users of Myspace had a "blog" tab to share their thoughts, stories and opinions. Maintaining a blog and attempting to create a following takes work. It puts you through a crash course in internet marketing 101....millions of bloggers = millions of people with enough knowledge to bring to market the next big "dot.com".
LinkedIn is another site that follows the basic profile based information sharing and networking model. LinkedIn allows users to network amongst their profession. I obtained my current employment through LinkedIn connections and this blog, both of which spawned from my use of Myspace.
Facebook opted for a different direction than the entertainment industry cornered by Myspace. They offer "fan pages" which users can join with a simple click of the "like" button. This again has changed internet marketing, as companies can now connect with millions of consumers FOR FREE!! Check out companies like Starbucks and Converse All Star - each have over 20 million "fans"!!!! But again....this door was opened by Tom and co.
Internet gaming used to consist of millions of users logged in to World of Warcraft. XBOX and PS3 also have added millions to the online gaming traffic, but it is Myspace that has brought people together for games as simple as FarmVille and MafiaWars. These games find their success by offering users ways to "get ahead" by completing offers by their affiliates, or by simply paying real money up front!! There are hundreds of these games, many boasting active users of over 1million!!
The idea of people being able to connect so intimately from all over the world in an instant is not new, think AOL Chat. But the ability to share so much information, and offer people a feeling of ownership by having their "own" website has changed the game forever.
Unfortunately, Myspace is now not much more than a portal to all things entertainment. But if you haven't been in a while...check them out! They are still great for music, movies, and gaming!!!
